Geography graduates have everything it takes for success in today’s workforce. Their unique mix of interdisciplinary knowledge, skills and abilities have perhaps never been more relevant. Geospatial skills are in high demand across all sectors, from state, local and federal government, to NGOs, businesses and consulting firms large and small. But selling your skills to employers who might not understand the value of a degree in geography can be extremely challenging and frustrating. Let’s face it: there just aren’t many job listings out there that say “Wanted: Geographer.” So where do you start?
This session brings together practicing geographers from a broad range of employment sectors to showcase the dynamic career options available to geography graduates. After short introductions and structured discussion, the session will be opened to audience Q&A.
Kyle Titlow U.S. Department of Transportation
Kyle Titlow () is a spatial statistician and geographer in the Office of Spatial Analysis and Visualization at the Bureau of Transportation Statistics as the US Department of Transportation. He primarily works with GIS to aid BTS in its legislative mandates to produce statistics on the performance of the national transportation system, working with data from all major modes, including aviation, highways, public transit, ships and ferries, and intermodal freight. His current projects focus on transportation equity and accessibility, noise pollution, highway congestion, data standardization, and big data analysis.
Carrie Hamilton Social Science Research Council
Carrie Hamilton () is an incoming PhD student in environmental studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Most recently, she was a program associate for the Social Data Initiative and Media & Democracy programs at the Social Science Research Council. In this role, she managed fellowships and coordinated research development workshops in support of scholarship on the relationships between media, technology, and politics and worked as the administrative coordinator for the Summer Institutes in Computational Social Science. She earned her bachelor’s in geography and environmental science from UNC Chapel Hill.
Nicolas Saravia Riba / New Mobility
Nicolas Saravia () is a consultant for companies in the new mobility space. He is currently an advisor for Riba, an electric moped-scooter startup. Nicolas’ experience includes working in the weather and competitive intelligence teams at Bird Rides, and as a consulting data analyst on various logistics and mapping projects. He uses geospatial skills to find insights and drive them into business results. Nicolas holds an MSc degree in geography from the University of Bristol, UK.
Terra Luke City of Philadelphia
Terra Luke () is a GIS Analyst with the Department of Public Property with the City of Philadelphia. With a Background in GIS and environmental studies, she works at maintaining the City’s asset dataset and integrated workplace management asset software. Collaborating with other City Departments to ensure the longevity of buildings and protecting them from environmental events, like flooding. Her ongoing work with Computer Aided Design allows departments to have a holistic view of interior spaces as well as occupancy and vacancy to create a more efficient working space.
Brent Sams E&J Gallo Winery
Brent Sams () is a Viticulture Research Scientist in the Winegrowing Research department at E&J Gallo Winery in Modesto, California. His work is focused on the spatial variability of grape composition/quality at different scales, from differences within single vineyards to regional scale multi-farm variability. Brent uses measurements and samples collected from vineyards, satellite remote sensing, and spatial analysis to understand spatial processes related to changes in fruit chemistry. He completed a MS degree at Virginia Tech concentrating on biogeography and is currently finishing his doctorate in horticulture at the University of Adelaide in Australia.
Tracy Whelen Travelers
Tracy Whelen () is a geospatial consultant and participant in the Business Insights and Analytics Leadership Development Program at Travelers. Her background is in hazards geography and GIS, with a master’s degree in geography from the University of South Carolina. She has also used her GIS skills while serving as a volunteer firefighter/EMT.
