Webinar: How to be a Good Colleague (Part II)

Continued from the “How to Be a Good Colleague” webinar from Spring 2021, this session aims to gather a diverse set of voices in terms of identity and experience to help the audience understand the value of being a good colleague to others and develop strategies for coping with toxic workspaces. The session will feature up to six speakers from academic and non-academic workspaces, who will also discuss the challenges of working in a variety of different settings. After introductions and panelist comments, the second half of the session will use breakout rooms for open Q&A.

Sarah Blue () Sarah Blue is Associate Professor of Geography at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX. Her work has focused on Latin American migration to the United States and socio-economic inequality, medical internationalism, and agroecology in Cuba. She is the current director of the Race, Ethnicity, and Place (REP) Conference and a long-time board member of the Conference for Latin American Geographers (CLAG).

Nicole Reiz () has served KU in many roles most recently as the Program Coordinator for Graduate Professional Development and now the Director of Professional Development in the Office of Graduate Studies. She is currently working on numerous projects supporting professional development and career advancement for graduate students across KU including the PhD Career Pathways Project and GradMaps. Nicole is a co-founder of the Big Ideas Incubator, an infrastructural innovation designed to holistically strengthen the University's research capabilities, impact, and relationship with the public.
Demetrice "Dee" Jordan Harvard Medical School
Demetrice "Dee" Jordan () Demetrice “Dee” Jordan is a Dean’s Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. She has a dual-doctorate in Geography and Environmental Science and Policy from Michigan State University. Dee’s research focuses on the ecological and environmental determinants of disease risk for vector-borne parasitic illnesses, infectious diseases, and Neglected Tropical Diseases of sub-Saharan Africa. Dee is a recipient of an NIH Loan Repayment Program (LRP) award for health disparities research. She is a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) consultant and has developed innovative programs and curricula to promote the principles of DEI in academic and non-profit settings.
Arvind Bhuta U.S. Forest Service
Arvind Bhuta () is an Ecologist/Geographer with the U.S. Forest Service. After graduating with a Zoology degree from Auburn University, he pursued his graduate research interests and studies in biogeography, forest ecology, dendrochronology, GIS, and remote sensing at Virginia Tech, where he received a Ph.D. in Geospatial and Environmental Analysis. He has been with the U.S. Forest Service since 2014.
Angela Rogers Penn State University
Angela Rogers () is a Ph.D. student in Workforce Education and Development and a full time employee in communications for the Department of Geography at Penn State. She has a B.A. in Journalism and a M.S. in Workforce Education and Development. Angela is a Distinguished Toastmaster and a member of ATD and the Pittsburgh chapter, currently serving on the chapter board of directors as the Vice President for Programs. She is a qualitative researcher. In addition to onboarding, her interests include DEI, mentoring, communication, organization development, leadership, and workplace wellness.
