Webinar: Non-Academic Career Paths for Geography PhDs
Date and Time: Thursday, September 23, 2021 3:00 pm - 4:15 pm U.S. Eastern Time
Are you on your way to earn a PhD in geography (or related) or did you recently graduate? Are you looking to career paths beyond academia? This webinar will feature geographers who followed a non-academic career path or pursuing a PhD with interest in a non-academic career. They will share their experience and how they think their geographic perspective benefits them along the way.
Corrie Monteverde, the moderator, plans to ask a few questions, such as: What were your career aspirations when you entered a PhD program, and were you thinking about a non-academic career path? What knowledge or skill has truly differentiated you from your non-geography colleagues thus far, and how do you make sure your voice as a geographer is heard? What do you think could have prepared you better for a non-academic career, and what is your advice for a PhD student who aspires to a non-academic career path?
As an audience member, you will have the possibility to ask questions. This webinar will be set-up as a Zoom “Meeting” to allow anyone to unmute themselves and/or show their camera to ask questions to panelists directly. You will also be able to ask questions through the chatbox if you prefer not being recorded. We received many questions from registrants already, below are just a few:
- Will employers think a PhD is overqualified for most of the jobs? Are recent or soon to be PhDs competitive in non-academic jobs compared to non-PhDs with longer experience in the workforce?
- How “easy” is it to switch from an academic to a non-academic career and vise-versa?
- Are there sections to add or remove from a CV?
- What are ways to translate academic experience to non-academic employers? (for example, teaching a class of 100 students, designing surveys, in-depth interviews, literature review, etc.) I am a department chair; how do I prepare PhD students for non-academic careers better?
- I am a department chair; how do I prepare PhD students for non-academic careers better?
- What networks can a PhD student build while in school to be more expand their appeal to non-academic employers?
- How do you keep motivated without call-backs from employers or overcome imposter syndrome when looking at the job requirements?
