Webinar: Career Paths in Physical Geography
Date and Time: Friday, October 15, 2021 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm U.S. Eastern Time
Physical geography emphasizes the spatial variations that occur and the temporal changes necessary to understand the contemporary environments of the Earth. It focuses upon the character of, and processes shaping, the land-surface of the Earth and its envelope. Its purpose is to understand how the Earth’s physical environment is the basis for, and is affected by, human activity.
This panel will feature 3-6 professional geographers who will discuss their career paths and strategies for finding employment in physical geography-related occupations. After introductions and brief remarks from the panelists, the second half will be reserved for open Q&A.

Patrick Barrineau Coastal Science & Engineering
Patrick Barrineau () is a coastal scientist for CSE, working in project management as well as report production. While at CSE, he has assisted or managed projects at more than a dozen locations from New York to Georgia. Prior to joining CSE, Dr. Barrineau studied coastal processes and landforms through field-based research on sediment transport and barrier island evolution. He has organized and led field studies in South Carolina, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina, New Mexico, California, and Brazil. In addition to his work at CSE, Dr. Barrineau teaches a graduate-level course in Coastal Zone Management at the University of South Carolina.
Kathleen Jamison NOAA
Kathleen Jamison () is the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary (NOAA) Deputy Superintendent, where she manages day-to-day facility, vessel, and budget operations for the Sanctuary, which protects 3,800 square miles of waters containing coral, seagrass, underwater maritime archaeological assets, and other important resources. Kathleen started her geography career as a nautical cartographer in 2006, followed by a few years managing hydrographic data acquisition projects for NOAA’s Office of Coast Survey. At the Sanctuary, where Kathleen has served as a manager for the last two years, Kathleen also works with GIS/mapping interns to make better maps of the Sanctuary's buoy locations and protected areas so that the Sanctuary's 5 million annual visitors know where they can fish, dive, and moor their boats safely. Kathleen holds a bachelor's degree in humanities from the University of Maryland and a master's in geographic and cartographic sciences from George Mason University.
Nicholas Enwright U.S. Geological Survey
Nicholas Enwright () has been a geographer at U.S. Geological Survey's Wetland and Aquatic Research Center in Lafayette, Louisiana since 2013. Nicholas uses applied coastal geography research to understand how the spatial distribution and patterns of environments, such as barrier islands and coastal wetlands, are changing through time. He received a B.S. in Geography from the University of North Texas in 2007, a M.S. in Applied Geography from the University of North Texas in 2010, and a Ph.D. from Louisiana State University in 2019.
James A. Schmid Schmid & Company, Inc., Consulting Ecologists
James A. Schmid () is a biogeographer and plant ecologist who has headed the firm of Schmid & Company, Inc., Consulting Ecologists, since 1985. He holds a B.A. degree cum laude from Columbia University, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and M.A. and Ph. D. degrees from the University of Chicago. He left his tenure-track position as Assistant Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Barnard College and Columbia University to become Vice President at the consulting firm of Jack McCormick & Associates in Devon, Pennsylvania, and served as Senior Ecologist at other firms before establishing his own organization. Dr. Schmid has served hundreds of clients, both those seeking permits for construction and those opposing projects, as well as federal, State, and local regulatory agencies seeking to design and implement environmental regulatory programs nationwide and in the MidAtlantic States.
James Dietrich University of Northern Iowa
James Dietrich () is an Assistant Professor of Geography at the University of Northern Iowa. His research combines physical geography and GIScience by using high-resolution remote sensing for monitoring rivers, with a specific interest in river restoration monitoring. Prior to his current position, he spent 3 years as a post-doctoral fellow at Dartmouth College. He has also worked professionally for Boeing leading GIS and remote sensing work on National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency contracts. He received his BS from the University of Kansas, MS from Texas State University, and Ph.D. from the University of Oregon in 2014.
