Webinar: GISCI and GISP Certification – An Exploration of Professionalism Early in a Career or Profession

Individuals attending this workshop will receive information on the various facets of a professional career, especially from a geospatial perspective. Included will be a discussion of certification and professional credentials in general, and the GISP, specifically, and how this area can help an individual succeed early and throughout one's career. The session will focus on the importance of the GISP certification and why one should invest the time and resources in gaining certification. Existing GISPs who may have questions about renewing their certification are also encouraged to attend.
Tony Spicci GIS Certification Institute
Tony Spicci () has been active in the geospatial community for over 30 years. He began his professional career with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) in 1992. During his career with the Department, Tony’s role evolved into building a team of research specialists that included technology, geospatial, biometrics and social science professionals to support science within the Department. He recently retired and became the Executive Director of the GIS Certification Institute. Tony has been an active member of the Missouri GIS Advisory Committee, National States Geographic Information Council, Missouri Geographic Names Board and is a past member of the National Geospatial Advisory Committee. He helped lead the effort to create the Coalition of Geospatial Organizations (COGO) where he serves today. In addition to working for the GISCI, Tony is a member of Missouri Task Force 1, a FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team and a volunteer with the Boone County Fire Protection District.
Clancy Wilmott University of California, Berkeley
Clancy Wilmott () is an Assistant Professor in Critical Cartography, Geovisualisation and Design in the Berkeley Centre for New Media and the Department of Geography. She comes to UC Berkeley from the Department of Geography at the University of Manchester, where she received her PhD in Human Geography with a multi-site study on the interaction between mobile phone maps, cartographic discourse and postcolonial landscapes. Professor Wilmott researches critical cartography, new media and spatial practices. She holds undergraduate degrees in Communications (Media Arts and Production) and International Studies (Italian), as well as a postgraduate degree in Cultural Studies from the University of Technology, Sydney. She is the author of Mobile Mapping: Space, Cartography, and the Digital published in 2020 by Amsterdam University Press.
Michael Scott Salisbury University
Michael Scott () is the Dean of the Henson School of Science and Technology, a professor in the Department of Geography and Geosciences, and the Director of the Eastern Shore Regional GIS Cooperative (ESRGC) at Salisbury University. He has led the School of Science since 2017, with a focus on improving student success in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics programs. He has nearly 25 years of experience in consulting, managing, and educating young people about geographic information systems (GIS), local government applications of GIS, environmental hazards, and cartographic visualization. He launched the ESRGC in 2004 to combine and leverage the collective funding of local governments, the commitment of Salisbury University to serve the citizens of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, and the technical skills of SU’s students and faculty in order to make state-of-the-art GIS technology and services to the surrounding local governments.
